ORBA staff members Fred and Jeff attended the Save the Salt meeting in Las Vegas during the Sema show. In an effort to share best practices and look for ways to improve the Save the hammers effort. The 2 hour meeting focused on some of the basic plans for the massive effort to save the Booneville Salt Flats in Utah. The Save the Salt program has a legal volunteer on staff as well as a very large group of dedicated enthusiasts who hope to protect the iconic racing location. In addition the campaign includes a member of the media who leads the effort to increase participation in the effort. ORBA was able to share how Save the Hammers has developed a strategic plan backed with a financial plan and is using the Livingston group as representation in Washington DC. This meeting represents a larger collaboration of enthusiasts beyond a single type of use on public lands, and is a positive improvement in communications.
Save The Salt is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to protect the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah and to promote its history and motorsports legacy. The organization aspires to keep this national treasure available for future generations.
In 2011, a number of prominent organizations formed the “Save the Salt Coalition” to help the nonprofit organization achieve its goal. The Coalition is seeking to restore the Bonneville Salt Flats with salt that was removed in previous decades for potash mining. The Coalition is working with government officials, mine operators and others to supplement the current salt replenishment activities.
